about

This song was actually written in 2004 when I was going to university in Nova Scotia and first appeared on my Sign & Semblance album, played on guitar rather than piano. When Jez and I first played it together in Vancouver, his jazzified piano chords brought a new soulful life to it that was missing from the original recording.
I've had the privilege of living in several beautiful and wild places - the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains of the BC interior, the beaches, valleys and mountains of Canada's west coast, and the red-clayed, tide-beaten shores of its east coast. Wilderness is something that has carved out my core, and has been the context in which I've felt most alive. 'Earth & Sky' is an expression of the joy I have found in the untidy beauty of the natural world, and my belief in our own 'wildness', our own built-in desire and need for adventure and freedom. Our modern world would reduce us to machines, coerce us into systems that rob us of our souls while at the same time robbing us of our wild places, and we ought to resist, must resist if we are to become more, not less, human.

lyrics

This is a song for the wild and the free - for all of the lost that lives in me
This is to say that I’m making my way in the absence of everything ordered and everything plain

And I’m alive in earth and sky, in these rivers that dance for my mischievous eyes and I am thinned by this tidy and civilized world that I’m in

Try as I may I just never quite seem to fit in
All these edges and corners, these boundaries that border me in
‘Cause I am not orderly, there’s more than four sides to me
And this ground that I’m made of, I’m bound to its anarchy

So I will step off of your walkways and head for the hills
Wander the woodlands, flesh out my soul and the way that I feel
And in this great expansiveness I’m opened right up to this:
We are all made for wilderness, called into pilgrimage

And I’m a live in earth and sky, in these rivers that dance for my mischievous eyes and I am thinned by this tidy and civilized world that I’m in

"Quite apart from that this album is extraordinary on its own merits there are few artists willing to expose their talents to such a sparse instrumental background, and you need to listen to it and discover its beauty for yourself."
